Taiwan’s representative to the US, King Pu-tsung says that relations between Taiwan and the US are at their most stable in decades. King was speaking on Thursday, local time, while preparing to board a flight to Taiwan.

He is set to become head of the National Security Council, and will be replaced by Shen Lyu-shun, the current representative to the UK.

Before departing, King told reporters that exchanges between peoples of the two countries have increased along with bilateral trade and investment. He also said that there is reason to be optimistic about the future of US-Taiwan relations.

King said that the US has been supportive of Taiwan’s efforts to join international organizations. He said that US support was one factor behind Taiwan’s return to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) after a 43 year absence as a “special guest”.

King also said that the beginning of negotiations on a bilateral Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) after a six year hiatus brings hope for the future of business exchanges between the two countries.
