Program Introduction

“It was trying times, but we survived.”

Filipino Poet Laureate Jess Santiago’s reminiscence.

There are this group of artists as young man, borne and breed by the 60s, found their calls in the 70s and went on to work towards their conviction in the 80s, and hold onto the 90s as surviver. Jess Santiago is one of them amongst my circle of old soldiers who never died. His interview with me earlier did survived too, a lost and found eventuality brought it back to light and dearly shared here. Twice awarded the Poet Laureate honor in his early years in his home country of Philippine, his wife, who had already passed away, was also a poetess. When I first spoke with Jess, I discovered I’d recorded a song with his wife’s poem with another Philippine songster - People who were bound to meet up in life, will do. The excerpt of the song that precedes Jess’s monologue was “The Latest News” a song in support of the rights movement for those who’d disappeared by the dictatorial regime of early years. A gem recovered here. Discover Jess Santiago on the net.
