Sarah Chen, known in Mandarin as 陳淑樺, gained widespread recognition as the "voice of urban women" following the release of three albums in the late 1980s that deviated from conventional love songs that depicted women as emotionally dependent on men.
Sarah Chen was born in Taiwan, and there is no public information suggesting she ever studied or lived abroad. Despite this, she covered many English songs so well that many fans assumed some of those songs were her originals.
This episode of Island Tunes highlights some of Sarah Chen’s music, including her most popular song: “When the Dream is Over” (夢醒時分) from 1989.
